Do you know how to add interactivity and expand or collapse container in Tableau?

If not, let`s learn how to do it.

First of all, you need to select a new dashboard and then drag a vertical container into the canvas. You will notice that the container will get the blue colour in its border as you can see in the picture below.

Now you must drag the charts into the canvas in the sequence that you want it to collapse. One very important thing is when you are doing the expand and collapse container, you must hide the titles from worksheet that you want to collapse.  That is the only way you can make the sheets expand or collapse in your dashboard.

As you can see in the picture below, I have bought the chart into the Canvas, but it is still with the titles and legend.

Now you can see in the next picture that I have hidden all the titles and legends:

For the next path you need to give action to those charts. So let’s see how it is.

Now, go to dashboard on the menu and select “Action” as the picture is showing below:

Add “Action” and select “Filter”:

In this example, I am going to select the “Country” as the source and “State” as the target to the first filter. Also, you need to choose “Select” and then “Exclude all values”. Do the same procedure to the next level of the collapse container, which is from state to city, in this example.

Now we got the expand and collapse container working as desired. From the Country to State and then from the State to City.

Next, all you need to do is to select the “Country” and the “State” in the dashboard map to collapse the containers and to drill down to city.

I hope that helps you all get started with expanding and collapsing containers.
