Intro

My name is John Lyu, I joined the Data school down under on the 27th of September in 2023. As a new data schooler, I cannot tell you how excited I am to be a part of this organization, and a member of the DASU2024 in Sydney.

So let me share with you my experience and thoughts during my first week of working.

Week1 overview

Can’t believe how fast the first week finished. It was a very exciting first week, on the first day we walked through what is effective dashboard design. On the second day, we had an introduction to data and data preparation. On Wednesday and Thursday, we dive straight into building visualization in Tableau. Boy was there a lot of content. Then on Friday, we had our first presentation on visual makeover which was thrilling for everyone.

Challenge

The biggest challenge was probably the intensity of the training. There are quite a few pieces of stuff we need to learn, such as Tableau, SQL, Alteryx, and PowerBI. Also, we are required to get the certificate for these analytics tools before the end of the training. However, the Data school has done a great job of providing excellent supporting staff and learning materials. Bethenny is an incredible coach. She is responsible, and patient and makes the class fun. Also, our daily schedule is properly spaced out, so that we don’t get absolutely smothered, and have some time to go into the kitchen to get ourselves some tea or a bo’oh’o’wa’er.

But in all seriousness, on day 2 the data join gave me quite some headache. If you are a bit iffy with the concept like I was, then let’s have a bit of a walkthrough together.

Say I have two tables that need to be joined together.

Name Cost
A 100
B 400
C 150
K 200

Name Quantity
D 8
A 1
E 2
B 4
C 5
C 7
A 6

The result of a left join is going to include everything from the left table plus the unmatched records, it will look like this:

Name_L Cost Name_R Quantity
A 100 A 1
B 400 B 4
C 150 C 5
C 150 C 7
A 100 A 6
K 200 null null

Right join:

Name_L Cost Name_R Quantity
null null D 8
A 100 A 1
null null E 2
B 400 B 4
C 150 C 5
C 150 C 7
A 100 A 6

Left only:

Name_L Cost Name_R Quantity
K 200 null null

Right only:

Name_L Cost Name_R Quantity
null null D 8
null null E 2

Inner:

Name_L Cost Name_R Quantity
A 100 A 1
B 400 B 4
C 150 C 5
C 150 C 7
A 100 A 6

Full:

Name_L Cost Name_R Quantity
null null D 8
A 100 A 1
null null E 2
B 400 B 4
C 150 C 5
C 150 C 7
A 100 A 6
K 200 null null

What I enjoyed

First, I would like to thank my parents who supported me along the way, my friend Johanna who helped me prepare for the job interview, and Data School for giving me this fantastic job opportunity.

Data has always been my passion, so every day as we are learning new skills that makes me very happy. Granted the training period isn’t going to be a small cake, the curriculum is quite challenging and intensive, but it is a good thing that I enjoy challenges. NO, actually I LOVE them. They consistently remind me to bring my best game. What is not to love? Tableau, love it, blogs? Love it, presentation?? Love it!

I am very fortunate to meet the members of this cohort. They are all very nice and talented people, and I feel like there is a lot I can learn from them. I am very happy with how well we get along with each other and are supportive of each other. We all come from diverse backgrounds, everyone being a strong and unique individual who has different areas of strength and interests, so we never run out of topics to talk about.

I also enjoyed dressing up for work every day, trying out new and different looks is challenging but satisfying at the same time. We are very flexible regarding the dress code in the office, which gives us more room for creativity. From shirts and blazers to jeans and T-shirts, we are encouraged to dress to our style but yet look sharp and professional.

Friday’s after-work drink was nice. There were a lot of people there, I met some new friends from the previous cohort, and they generously shared their experience and a few tips to quickly adapt to the work pace. It was nice to hang back with a couple of beers after a hard day of work.

On a side note, I enjoy the British accent very much, and there are a lot of people from the UK in the office. So, it is basically heaven to listen to people talk every day.
