In one of Data School project, a Tableau dashboard was created to create insights about the required budget for future periods. The budget was also projected for building(s) and component(s) for future budget allocations. The resulting dashboard visualisation can be seen in Figure 1.

Figure 1. Resulting dashboard for budget projection

In the budget projection, filters, legends, and the charts can be used to filter the budget projections based on design life categories and years from building to component level. Utilising these filters will eventually update details of general statistics and visualisations for viewers who only want to see specific information.

For this budget projection dashboard, the sheets are being used as filters from using dashboard filter actions. The filtering sheets are separated into Design Life Categories, Years and Buildings filters. Aside from filter actions, the budget projection dashboard also uses dashboard set actions. The set actions are used for Design Life Categories, Components and Sub-components.

Design Life Categories

Design Life Categories are used in 2 dashboard actions, which are filter and set actions. In the filter action, the selected Design Life Category(s) is(are) expected to only show information which are relevant to the selected Category(s).

Aside from being used as a dashboard filter, the Design Life Categories also works as a dashboard set action. In the set action, the trend on budget projection will show several coloured line(s) which determine the trend(s) of category(s) that is(are) selected from all Design Life Categories. Configuration of the Design Life Categories filter and set actions can be seen in Figure 2a and 2b, respectively. Meanwhile, sample use of Design Life Categories as both dashboard filter and set actions is shown in Figure 2c.

Year

Year(s) is(are) used as dashboard filter action to filter data based on selected year(s). The resulting visualisation from filtering year(s) will show filtered general statistics, buildings, and components. Figure 3a and 3b show the configuration and usage of Year filter action.

Buildings

Building(s) is(are) used as dashboard filter action to filter data based on selected building(s). The resulting visualisation from filtering building(s) will show filtered general statistics and components. Figure 4a and 4b show the configuration and usage of Building filter action.

Components and Sub-Components

Component(s) and Sub-Component(s) are used as dashboard set actions to drill-down data based on selected component(s) and sub-component(s). The resulting visualisation from clicking on component(s) and sub-component(s) will show a drill-down of information for specific sub-component(s) and/or material(s). Figure 5a and 5b show the configuration Component and Sub-Component set actions. Meanwhile, Figure 5c shows the usage of Component and Sub-Component set actions in a drilldown chart.
