The Challenge

Today is the second day of dashboard week and we were given a data set about flight routes in the US to different destinations, including domestic and international flights, from 1990 to 2022. The data was cleansed and ready to be used in Tableau without having to do data preparation in Alteryx. However, my teammate – Nam, has found out that the data got some duplicates after putting the whole data set through Unique tool and filtered out 341 rows that were duplicated. So the lesson is to always check your data first.

The Dashboard

For the dashboard, I wanted to drilldown the data to look at the flights between the US and Australia only. So after having an overview on the number of flights and number of passengers changing over the years, along with potential reason for the down trends in 1991, 2003, 2009 and 2019, I started looking at the routes to Australia only.

The bar chart shows the most popular route between the 2 countries, which is LA – Sydney. We can also see that there are barely any flights between the Northeast and Midwest to any of the states in Australia. This might be due to the fact that there’s no direct flight from these areas and passengers have to connect flights at LA, which makes this route the most popular, or might be flights are too expensive.

Looking at the frequency of flights by months give us an idea on when US passengers would like to come to Australia more, December and January are the peaked months but we can also see there’s a slight increase in July for all states as well which I am wondering why.

In conclusion, the dashboard gave an overview on the airline services between the 2 countries. If I had more time, I would like to dig further in other areas, such as the Airlines, other countries, and domestic flights as well.
