I passed the Alteryx Designer Core Certification on Sunday (yay, go me!) It is the first certification I have obtained through The Data School, and I was quite nervous before taking it. 3 weeks ago I had never used Alteryx before, and after the first week of using it, I still felt like a complete beginner and felt like the core certification was way out of reach. But after only 1 more week of exposure to the program, I passed the certification with flying colors. So here are my top 3 tips for passing the Alteryx Designer Core Certification.

1. Familiarise yourself with the different Alteryx tools

This one seems like a no-brainer, but it is essential for passing the core certification. Alteryx has a handy feature that allows users to view examples of how to use each tool. Simply click on the tool in the tool palette and click on “open example”. This will open a new workflow with a description of the tool and multiple examples of how to use the tool. Make sure you run the workflow to see the different examples.

2. Complete several Alteryx weekly challenges

Alteryx has an amazing online community, filled with people who are extremely passionate about Alteryx. As I am writing this blog there are over 300 Alteryx weekly challenges. Each challenge includes the level of difficulty, ranging from basic to difficult, the topics covered within the challenge, and the certification level. The beauty of Alteryx weekly challenges is that the challenges are more difficult than what you will encounter on the exam, so if you can nail these weekly challenges, then you’ll be right on your way to passing the certification with ease! Every weekly challenge also includes a solution in the file to help you understand what shape your data needs to be, so you can double-check that your solution is correct. Lastly, people post their workflows online, so if you do get completely stuck you can always look at those as a reference to nudge you in the right direction.

3. Utilize the interactive lessons and practice exams on the Alteryx website

Lastly, once you understand how each tool works, completing the interactive lessons provided by Alteryx is a great place to hone in on your skills, as some of these exercises are similar to the questions on the exam. The interactive lessons provide great insight into all of the different tools in Alteryx and also guide you through a step-by-step process on how to use each tool. I also found that the interactive lessons explained some more difficult concepts in an easier way to digest compared to some other methods.

Remember to manage your time effectively during the exam, read the questions carefully, and utilize the available resources, such as the tool palette and the Alteryx Help documentation. Good luck with your certification journey!
