This blog is about how we can achieve drill through in Tableau. But before that, we need to understand the difference between Drill Through and Drill Down.

Drill Down: It is a capability that takes the user from a more general view of the data to a more specific one. For example, a drill-down report that shows sales by segment can allow the user to select a segment and see sales by category within that segment.

Drill Through: It is capability that takes user to a report that is relevant to the data being analyzed. For example, a report that shows sales by segment can allow the user to click on it and reveal an analysis grid of the same data, or a chart representing the data in visual form. It is called “drill through” because it is a feature that allows the user to pass from one report to another while still analyzing the same set of data.

I am using famous sample super store dataset to demonstrate how drill through can be achieved.

Goal: Drill through the Segments and see Profit and Profit ratio for each Category and Sub-category within selected Segment.

1- First create a set for the segment field.Place this segment set into the filters. From filter drop down option select customize and uncheck ‘select all’. Afterwards select single value drop down option.

2- Create below calculated fields.

3- Now change the value of Segment Set to ‘Consumer’ and create Consumer sheet. Which shows profit and profits ratio of category and sub-category within that segment. Afterwards add Consumer Filters field to the filters, select “True”. Repeat this step and create sheets for Corporate and Home Office segments.

4- Create a Parameter ‘Segment Parameter’ and calculated field ‘Segment Filter’ .Place this field in filters and select True.Place Segment field in rows pill and uncheck ‘show header’.Remember to do this step for other two sheets as well.

5- Create new Dashboard for category and subcategory. Add Consumer, Corporate and Home office sheets in this Dashboard. Create a second Dashboard for the  segments from where you need to drill  through to category and sub-category Dashboard.

6- Lastly you need to create two Dashboard Actions.

  •  ActionsAdd Action > Change Parameter ;Target Parameter: Segment Parameter ;Source Field:  Segment
  • ActionsAdd Action > Go To Sheet ; Souce Sheets: Segment ;Target Sheet: Category and Sub-Category.

All done, give it a go 🙂
