For my first Dashboard this week with the given dataset, I set out to create a visualisation that could assist me, should I be looking to move out, in answering the question where should I live?

The dataset we got given was customer service requests for the City of Melbourne and I have combined this with housing prices to answer this question on more than one level. So lets begin…

When looking at the map, Parkville, Carlton North, and East Melbourne are out of my price range (East Melbourne also has quite a high number of service requests for a small area, which is a red flag). Melbourne is a lot more affordable, but a large bulk of the requests come from this area, I’m looking for a much lower number than that. Port Melbourne and Flemington are both in affordable locations and have low request numbers. Lets look at these suburbs deeper…

Port Melbourne

Housing is priced at an average of $1.2 million, which for these days may be considered cheap, and with an average of only 6 requests per month this is a good start. Majority of these requests are from the Waste, Street Cleaning and Litter category, with these requests mostly consisting of missing bins and missed bin collection, which I am not too fussed about.

The Parks and Trees request category has the next highest number of requests, with majority due to tree maintenance and only one request per park cleanliness category that shows their parks and lawns are in pristine condition. Requests are completed in lightening speed at an average of 8 days, well under the city wide average of 11.

Flemington

Moving on to Flemington…

Housing is priced at an average of just over $800k, which is significantly cheaper than Port Melbourne and consists of just an average of 1.5 requests per month! This number is also skewed up due to the outlier of 5 requests in June of 2016. Majority of requests are once again from the Waste, Street Cleaning and Litter category, consisting of missed bin collection and damaged bin requests. There are 2 requests for syringe pick up, which is a bit concerning, but these are still very low numbers in the grand scheme of things.

Parks and Trees is also the next category in number of requests due to tree maintenance, but their low request numbers in regards to park cleanliness is another positive. Unfortunately, completion of these requests takes much longer in Flemington at an average of 12.5 days, which means that its above the average and is only better than South Wharf.

Decision…

And the winner is…

Port Melbourne! Although more expensive (but still in budget) its low average request numbers numbers and quick request completion time give it the edge over Flemington. Port Melbourne here I come!
