Dashboard Week – Day 1: Mountaineering

This week we have started a Dashboard Week. We will have make a Dashboard and a blog everyday and present it to our group. The dataset use for this first dashboard is about Mountain Expeditions.  In this blog post, I will breakdown in steps the process of creating a dashboard in one day.

1 – Look at the dataset:

Explore the data set to check all the fields and the options that I could use for the dashboard.

2 – Dataset at Tableau:

I started then to play around with the dataset to check what could possibly make sense and what insights I could possibly take from the data. Sometimes returning to the original excel file to check some fields.

3 – Decision:

I Decided to explore the accidents and deaths of the data focus on the expeditions. Stated to build the charts based on the previous step, formatting and creating calculations.

Build a dashboard, put all the charts in context to create a history that make sense demonstrating the main insights. I focus on time, altitude, location, and expedition size.

Time

Altitude

Location

Expedition Size

 4 – Final:

Last part was formatting and creating context to the charts and build a history to make sense. In the last session, I had a summary of the main findings.

5 – Challenges:

  • Time: Time management was really difficult, but able to manage properly and deliver the dashboard.
  • Skills: It was a challenge to think into the insights and, at the same time, apply the skills that we have learned.
