Dashboard Week – Day 4: US Alcohol Consumption

On the fourth day of Dashboard Week, the dataset focused on US Alcohol Consumption. The report was created using Power BI.

1 – Alteryx

The data was downloaded and imported into Alteryx for manipulation. Before manipulation, the data was in its raw form.

In the first container, the data was downloaded and split into columns. In the second container, the relevant rows and columns were selected. All tables were then joined using the Join tools, and the cleaned data was output.

This is the table after the manipulation.

2 – Power BI Report

The key question addressed in this report was: “Do people drink more in cold or hot weather?” A comparison was made between the coldest state (Alaska) and the hottest state (Florida).

The findings showed that the population drinks more in Alaska than Florida, with a difference of nearly 8%. The gap between the states was more pronounced in the 1980s but has decreased over time. In the last three years, alcohol consumption has been higher in Florida than in Alaska.

The overall alcohol content in drinks has decreased over the years, with no difference in this pattern between the states. However, the alcohol content in beer has slightly increased recently. Beer is the most consumed beverage, followed by wine and spirits. The difference in spirits consumption between the states is greater than for other beverages.

Summary

While alcohol consumption is generally higher in colder regions, the difference compared to warmer areas is narrowing over time. In recent years, Florida has shown higher alcohol consumption than Alaska. Overall alcohol content in drinks is decreasing, except for a slight increase in beer. Beer remains the most popular beverage, while spirits show the largest regional consumption difference.
