Dashboard Week – Day 5: Pixar Movies

On the last day of Dashboard Week, we were tasked with creating a dashboard in Tableau using a dataset of Pixar movies.

This time, the data was already clean, so we didn’t need to use Alteryx for preprocessing.

Since most people would likely focus on the movies themselves, I decided to explore what happens behind the scenes, specifically examining the people who have worked on these films. The question I aimed to answer was: Who stands out behind Pixar’s success?

Participation

The dataset included 95 individuals who contributed to 28 movies. Of those, 33 people worked on multiple films, and 14 contributed to more than three.

Awards

The success of these movies is closely linked to the efforts of those behind the scenes, often reflected in award nominations. Andrew Stanton’s films have received at least 27 nominations in total. However, when measuring awards per film, Jim Reardon and Jim Morris lead the way.

People’s Reviews vs. Critics’ Scores

There is little difference between public reviews and critics’ scores. Generally, if a movie scores high with one group, it scores high with the other, with no significant discrepancies. Movies from Jim Morris, Alec Sokolow, and Jan Pinkava ranked highest on both IMDb and Metacritic.

Budget vs. Box Office

Regarding budget versus box office returns, Andrea Datzman, Mark Nielsen, and Nicole Parades Grindle contributed to films with higher budgets and greater returns. However, four individuals participated in films that did not generate profits.
