This dataset contained six tables:

  1. Genre Table – Categorises each Pixar film by genre, listing its associated attributes.
  2. Box Office Table – Tracks financial performance, including budget and box office earnings in different markets.
  3. Academy Awards Table – Records Pixar’s Academy Award nominations and wins by film and award type.
  4. Pixar Films Table – Contains general film details such as release date, runtime, rating, and plot summary.
  5. Pixar People Table – Lists key contributors to each film, including their roles (e.g., director, writer, voice actor).
  6. Public Response Table – Captures audience and critic reception through Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, CinemaScore, and IMDb ratings.

In Tableau, the Pixar Films table was related with each of the other five tables on the Film field.

Data Story:

The data story explored how Pixar sequels compare with original films across box office performance, critical reception, audience scores, and Academy Awards. The analysis was divided into the following three sections:

  1. Box Office Performance – Analyse how sequels and originals compare in terms of total earnings, profitability, and trends over time.
  2. Critical & Audience Reception – Examine critic and audience scores from Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb to determine whether sequels are as well-received as originals.
  3. Academy Awards Recognition – Investigate Pixar’s Academy Award nominations and wins to see if sequels achieve the same level of prestige as originals.

Key Findings:

  • Pixar sequels dominate the box office, earning nearly twice as much as original films while maintaining similar budgets.
  • However, when it comes to critical reception and awards, originals still have the edge. While Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb scores show only slight differences, sequels are less frequently recognized by the Academy.
  • Yet, standout follow-ups like Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 prove that when done right, sequels can rival Pixar’s most celebrated originals.
