Overview

Today’s task was to explore a large database on global coal and metal mine production, with data spanning from 2000 to 2021. Structured across 12 interconnected tables, the challenge was to find an interesting story to highlight.

Data Model

In this data model, the Facilities table acts as the fact table, connecting key information across other tables. It includes essential details about each mining facility, such as country, type, and capacity, and links to tables like Coal, Waste, Transport, and Reserves. This structure allows us to analyze production, exports, waste management, and reserves data in relation to each facility, creating a unified view of global coal production across various dimensions.

Power BI Report

Report Overview

This dashboard gives a clear view of coal production, exports, and environmental impact across major markets. We see notable differences in production and sales volume by country, with the United States, India, and China leading in coal facilities and exports. China stands out as the biggest market for coal, while countries like Mexico and Mongolia have the highest waste per tonne, pointing to possible areas for environmental improvement. Over time, the volume of coal transported has generally grown, though recent years show signs of a slowdown. Altogether, these insights reveal the global scope of coal production and exports
