It’s Day 2 of the Dashboard Week! Today is a power BI challenge and we’re diving into an extensive mining dataset that covers global coal and metal production in detail, and this time, I’m also experimenting with something new, a dark background dashboard! Creating a dark-themed dashboard has been quite a fun challenge; it’s my first time working with this style, and though it was tricky at first, it’s turning out to be pretty engaging!
The dataset we’re working with is truly impressive: it’s clean, comprehensive, and spans multiple years of data on coal and metal production worldwide. With everything from production volumes to types of materials and ownership details, there’s a lot to explore. The data even came with a detailed database model, which makes it a lot easier to understand the relationships between the different tables and fields.

With such a massive dataset, I spent a fair bit of time just familiarizing myself with it and brainstorming potential stories to tell. After exploring a few options, I decided to focus on coal, a critical resource for energy and steel production. My aim is to discover which countries truly dominate the coal market, both in terms of production and sales. In this analysis, I’ll be looking at the top producers and sellers, tracking trends over time, and comparing what countries produce versus what they sell.

Feel free to take a look at the dashboard to see how it all comes together, especially with the new dark theme I’m experimenting with. Would love to hear your thoughts!
