On day 5 of #DSDW, we get to work with Pixar data (yay!). As this is the last dashboard for the week, which means we only have roughly half a day to complete it, our coach decided we’d suffered enough, and we deserve a clean set of data.

Dataset

Here is how the clean data sets were modelled:

All the tables are relatively small and do not contain redundancies. They are all related by Film names.

As a Toy Story fan, I had some pressing questions:

1. How do the films across the franchise compare to all other Pixar films?

With the overall Pixar average of 88.36 on Rotten Tomatoes, all four films ranked well above the average, with the first two bagging a perfect rating of 100.

2. Did they win any awards?

Yes, they absolutely did. All four films won Original Song, Original Screenplay, and Animated Feature awards each. On top of that, Toy Story and Toy Story 3 have both won Original Score, Best Picture, and Adapted Screenplay.

3. Money talks?

There is an obvious trend here that the newer films have bigger budgets and collected larger revenue. However, $30m in the 1991 is probably similar to $200m in the 2020’s. In fact, the profit margins for the sequels are half of what the original Toy Story’s was. This goes to suggest that bigger budget does not necessarily mean better quality and better recipient – it could simply reflect the economic inflation.

4. Is the Toy Story 4 really least liked as the Reddit community claims?

When this film was released in 2019, there were loads of critics from fans including storyline being half baked and seemingly unnecessary addition to the franchise. Across all three rating systems in the dataset, Toy Story 4 scored the lowest and won the least awards.

Conclusion

The Toy Story franchise remains well-loved, with the original film still regarded as the best. When an original is that good, fans have high expectations for the sequels — which unfortunately, can go either way.
