Spirits Surpass Beer in Ethanol Consumption, Is There a Correlation with the Young Population?

In 2022, a total of 8 billion gallons of beverages were consumed in the USA, translating to approximately 700 million gallons of ethanol consumption during the same period. The overall consumption of both beverages and ethanol has been increasing, primarily due to the gradual population growth across states.

However, per capita beverage consumption has been steadily declining since 1980, aligning with the long-term downward trend in beer consumption. In contrast, ethanol consumption per capita experienced a significant drop after 1980 but began to rebound in 1999, driven primarily by an increase in spirits and wine consumption.

 

Spirits Surpass Beer in Ethanol Consumption (2022)

Beer has historically been the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the U.S., maintaining a significant lead over wine and spirits for decades. However, 2022 marked a major turning point in consumption trends. For the first time since alcohol data collection began in 1977, spirits overtook beer as the top source of ethanol consumption, both in total volume and per capita.

This shift reflects changing consumer preferences, with more people opting for spirits-based drinks such as cocktails and high-proof liquors over traditional beer. Factors influencing this trend may include evolving drinking habits, the rise of craft and premium spirits, shifting demographics, and changing social drinking patterns. If this trend continues, it could have long-term implications for the beverage industry, impacting production, marketing strategies, and alcohol regulations.

 

Is There a Correlation Between Alcohol Consumption and Young Population Trends?

While California led in total beverage consumption due to its large population, New Hampshire had the highest ethanol consumption per capita.

Examining the relationship between alcohol consumption and young population trends, the population change in the 14–21 age group closely follows the ethanol consumption trend for spirits over the same period. This suggests a possible shift in drinking preferences among younger generations, with spirits becoming more popular than beer or wine. This shift may have contributed to the overall changes in ethanol consumption trends.

 

Nevada Ranked 1 in Ethanol Consumption (1977–99)

Before 2000, Nevada consistently ranked highest in ethanol consumption per capita followed by DC and New Hampshire. However, as the 14–21 age group grew, spirits consumption saw a significant decline, suggesting a shift in drinking habits.

In contrast, Washington, D.C., experienced a decline in both total population and young population, which correlated with a drop in spirits consumption. On the other hand, Delaware showed a bouncing trend in its young population, which aligned with a rebound in total ethanol consumption.

This correlation between young population trends and alcohol consumption suggests a potential link, but further investigation with additional data is needed to gain deeper insights into alcohol consumption behaviours.

 

New Hampshire Ranked 1 in Ethanol Consumption (2000–2022)

Since 2000, New Hampshire has ranked highest in ethanol consumption per capita, followed by Washington, D.C. and Nevada. Among the top three states, spirits consumption has taken the lead since 2008, setting a national trend that has continued to rise. Specifically, in D.C., spirits consumption has consistently exceeded beer consumption, which could be influenced by the political demographics in the region.

In addition to the rise in spirits consumption, there has been an increase in wine consumption in Washington, D.C., reflecting a broader trend towards a more diverse alcohol preference.

Meanwhile, Delaware has seen an increase in its young population, which aligns with a rise in spirits consumption per capita. Over the last 10 years, the figures have almost doubled, indicating a significant change in alcohol consumption patterns. This trend in Delaware may warrant further monitoring by government agencies to understand the implications on public health and policy.
