This week, I received a dataset containing detailed information about Pixar movies as part of my work at the Data Science (DS) department. My primary focus for the day was to analyze and investigate the performance standings of each Pixar movie, specifically looking at their ratings and box office earnings.

I aimed to explore how each movie ranks in terms of its performance across both key metrics: the average ratings from popular review platforms (such as IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic) and their corresponding box office revenue. By analyzing this data, I could better understand which movies performed exceptionally well, not only in terms of audience and critic reception but also in financial success.

Additionally, I explored the relationship between high ratings and high box office earnings to see if there’s a pattern where well-reviewed movies tend to also perform well financially, or if there are outliers where ratings don’t necessarily correlate with box office success.

Movie Summary and KPIs

First part of the dashboard includes a filter to select a Pixar movie and detailed information about the movie such as release date, film rating, budget, people involved, genre, and award list followed by KPIs such as average rating, box office earning, budget invested, and return on Investment (ROI).

Box Office or Rating? Or Both?

The scatter plot below is divided into four sections (quartiles) by average lines, representing different combinations of high/low ratings and high/low earnings or investment returns. You can use this visualization to see where a selected movie falls within these categories. The average rating and ROI for the Pixar movies were 83 and 4.32 (432%), respectively.

Wall-E: High Ratings but Low Box Office Return per Budget

For example, selecting Wall-E allows you to see how it compares to other Pixar films. Wall-E received an impressive 96.3 average rating across major review platforms, solidifying its reputation as a well-crafted movie. However, its $521 million worldwide box office earnings were below Pixar’s average. Despite a $180 million production budget, the film only scored about 2.9 in ROI, once again underperforming relative to Pixar’s average, 4.32.

Pixar Movie Ratings: IMDB, Cinema, Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes

The selected movie’s ratings (red circle) from different sources are displayed here. Each distribution below shows where the movie’s rating falls across different review platforms.

For instance, Wall-E received a higher rating from IMDB (8.4/10) and Metacritic (95/100). However, its Cinema Score (A, 90/100) was around the median compared to other Pixar movies. Meanwhile, Rotten Tomatoes rated the film 95/100, a strong score, though not the highest among Pixar films.

Box Office and Average Rating

A ranked list of Pixar films based on Box Office performance and Average Rating. For example, Wall-E ranked 6th in Box Office earnings and 3rd in Average Rating among 28 Pixar movies.
